“Seeing the forest for the bees:” Habitat elements for native bees in northeastern trees & forests

In the historically forested northeastern US, up to 2/3 of our wild bee species use forested habitats for part of their life cycles. Join me for an adventure exploring how wild bees use the woods–from the leafy forest floor to deadwood to the “meadow in the sky” at the tippy top of the canopy! I will connect these to applied suggestions, and introduce “focal bees” whose life cycles rely on different characteristic elements of a healthy forest.

Kass’s doctoral work in the Cornell Entomology Department characterized pollen usage by wild bees active in early spring forests and forest canopies, and how the movement of bees between forests and orchards can support apple orchard pollination. At the Xerces Society, Kass is a Pollinator Conservation Biologist working to research, communicate, and provide trainings for land managers on the life cycles of forest bees — and the crucial but often-overlooked connections between pollinator conservation and forest health and ecological forest stewardship.

WILD in the Garden State

Natives For Container Gardening

It’s New Jersey, the most densely populated state in the USA. Many of us ask can we support pollinators and birds on our balconies and our tiny, on average, ¼ acre yards. Well Jeremy Fant lives in Chicago, with only a 5 X 10’ balcony for gardening. For the past 15 years he has learned by trial and error what containers work best, the plant partnerships that are successful, even flourishing year to year. By setting out to create a thriving native plant container garden he has discovered what works and will share the container materials, soils, plants and more that grow successfully on his balcony.

Jeremie Fant is Director of Conservation at Negaunee Institute of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Originally from Australia, Jeremie received his Degree in Horticulture from the University of Adelaide and then went on to get his Doctorate in Genetics at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Jeremie will educate us on successfully planting pollinator friendly perennials for small spaces!

Plant Communities of New Jersey

From the Highlands to the Pinelands, New Jersey is home to a wide variety of beautiful and distinctive native plant communities. This talk will describe and illustrate a few of these unique ecosystems. Beginning with observation of nature, we’ll cover important New Jersey ecoregions (for example, prairies, red maple swamps, and coastal plan hardwood forests), describing each one in detail and explaining what to plant to recreate it. Our goal will be to understand how gardeners can help restore natural habitats by planting groups of species that grow together in nature.

She maintains a horticulture practice in Bergen County focused on designing gardens, advising clients on sustainability, and installing and caring for native plantings. She is a vice president of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey and a member of the Glen Rock Environmental Commission.

Silver Linings & Lemonade: Creative Responses to a Catastrophic Storm

Presented by Kathleen V. Salisbury

In September of 2021, an EF2 tornado catastrophically damaged the 187-acre Ambler Arboretum of Temple University. After losing more than 500 trees in their horticultural collection and hundreds more in the natural spaces, Kathy was faced with the question: how do you respond to an event that has destroyed your living laboratory in minutes? After a brief history of the Ambler Arboretum, Kathy will discuss what has been learned during the process of recovery that continues to this day, including planting, tree resilience, and spontaneous vegetative regeneration. She will also share her future vision for a natural space that has been changed forever, a subject with obvious relevance in this tumultuous era of climate change.

Biography:

Kathleen V. Salisbury is a passionate horticulturist and educator. Since she was young, exploring the pine barrens of her southern NJ home, Kathy has been fascinated and delighted by the natural world around her. Never losing that passion, Kathy earned a BS in Ornamental Horticulture and Environmental Design from Delaware Valley University and an MS in Public Horticulture Management from the University of Delaware, where she was a Longwood Fellow. After more than two decades in various horticultural and educational roles, from adjunct professor to zoo horticulturist, Kathy is an award-winning educator and public horticulture leader. With her goal in life to get people as excited about the natural world as she continues to be, she recently earned her MEd in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning from Penn State. Currently, Kathy is the Director of the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University, where she is also an adjunct instructor teaching woody plant identification and landscape management. A past president of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey, Kathy now volunteers with the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy in her adopted home state of Pennsylvania. When not teaching, studying, or learning, Kathy is outdoors as much as possible, tending to her flock of happy hens, kayaking, snowboarding, or hiking, depending on the season.

Why are Tick-Transmitted Infections Spreading? Biodiversity and Infectious Diseases

Presented by Dr. James Shepherd

A dense, biodiverse native-plant garden might seem like a haven for ticks—and thus disease—but long-term ecological patterns in the Northeast suggest a different story. James Shepherd will explore how human land use—suburban expansion, species invasions, and habitat fragmentation—has reshaped disease ecology, fueling the rise of Lyme disease and other zoonoses. He will explain how invasive plants like Japanese barberry create ideal microhabitats for ticks and their hosts, and examine the “dilution effect,” in which declining biodiversity amplifies pathogen transmission. Finally, he will present strategies for using native plantings and connected habitat networks to suppress vector-borne disease.

Biography:

Dr. James Shepherd is an Infectious Disease physician at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital, specializing in Tuberculosis and other Mycobacterial infections. He teaches Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and other global processes changing the world of infectious disease. He is also a farmer and owns Smokedown Farm in northwest Connecticut, where he raises sheep and cows, improving the health of both livestock and the environment. The farm was the largest hop grower in Connecticut, but is now transitioning to native and novel fruits as more environmentally sensitive crops.

Dr Shepherd has experience as a molecular and cell biologist, a physician, and a public health specialist. He has worked in Nigeria, Botswana, India, and Bangladesh, implementing national HIV and TB treatment programs and COVID treatment in refugee camps for both the US Government and the World Health Organization.

Here’s a challenge! Although many of us are great at identifying mature wildflowers and other native plants, seedling identification can be difficult at best, and resources for seedling ID are few and far between. During this workshop, we will look at the seedlings of many native plants, both those with and without unique characteristics. Randi will also share resources available for native plant seedling identification and provide guidelines for identification in the field.

About Randi: Dr. Randi Eckel has been working with native plants for over 40 years, and she founded the mail-order native plant nursery Toadshade Wildflower Farm in 1996 to further public awareness and availability of native plants. A life-long naturalist, lover of nature, entomologist, and confirmed plant and ecology nerd, Randi specializes in the interactions between plants and other living things. She is known for her lively and engaging lectures and workshops on growing and propagating native plants, and offers interesting, nuanced information on the complex issues facing native plants and native plant communities. She is the past president (and is currently serving as a vice president) of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey.

Ecological disruption is no longer abstract or remote. It is unfolding daily in our yards, parks, and landscapes, manifesting itself in storms of unprecedented intensity that alter forests overnight and diseases spreading rapidly through degraded habitats. Traditional landscape management methods—rigid, manicured, and heavily dependent on constant intervention—have proven insufficient to respond to the pace and scale of change. This symposium directly engages with these evolving conditions, bringing together three distinct yet complementary perspectives rooted in ecological landscape design, infectious disease ecology, and arboretum management and horticulture. Each speaker brings practical wisdom and conceptual depth, highlighting strategies to enhance resilience, sustain biodiversity, and creatively adapt to environmental uncertainty.

At the heart of this gathering is an exploration of critical intersections: between human intention and ecological spontaneity, biodiversity and community health, and catastrophic events and innovative recovery. Renowned landscape designer Larry Weaner will advocate for design approaches that embrace the inherent dynamism and unpredictability of natural systems, showing how ecological principles can guide the creation of self-sustaining, adaptive landscapes. Dr. James Shepherd of Yale will illuminate the often-overlooked relationship between biodiversity loss and human health, explaining how restoring balanced ecosystems can reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Lastly, Kathleen Salisbury’s experience managing the Ambler Arboretum after catastrophic storm damage provides a compelling case study in how horticultural expertise and creative leadership can transform ecological devastation into powerful educational opportunities and model landscape-restoration projects. Together, these speakers challenge us to deepen our ecological literacy and cultivate practical, adaptable responses to the environmental disruptions shaping our era.

This symposium is designed for attendees at all levels of experience and expertise, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned professionals. Throughout the day, participants will have opportunities during breaks to connect with organizations actively shaping environmental awareness and action, such as Dark Sky International New Jersey, Jersey-Friendly Yards, FoHVOS New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team, The Nature of Reading Bookshop, and Garden State Gardens. These interactions will provide valuable resources, deepen community ties, and further enrich the day’s discussions.

Light pollution is the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally. Light pollution disrupts wildlife, impacts human well-being, wastes money and energy, contributes to climate change, and blocks our view of the universe.

Steve Mariconda, an avid astronomer and public health care professional, had a profound experience the first time he saw the Milky Way in a pristine sky. Away from street lights, floodlights on commercial properties, car headlights and other human-made interference that combine to make the nighttime environment unnaturally bright he had a keen sense of something bigger.

Mariconda advocates that light pollution is relatively easy to fix. Using fewer and more targeted light sources and replacing white light bulbs with yellow ones are just a few of the recommendations he will make in this program.

Join Chris Martine who will share his immense understanding of the trees, shrubs and vines of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic, with a keen focus on shrubs. Martine has written two field guides featuring illustrations by his wife, Rachel Figley-Martin, both published by the NJ Forest Service, Trees of New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic States is now in its 7th edition, and Shrubs and Vines of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic States. The 3rd edition was just published in December 2025.

When they started on the Tree of New Jersey & the Mid-atlantic back in the 1990’s the Martines’ apartment was “shrub central” – with Chris out in the field collecting specimens during the day and Rachel drawing what he brought back after she got home from her day job.

Recognizing there was limited information on shrubs and vines of NJ and the Mid-Atlantic he was asked to create a similar field guide for those plants. The first edition of “Shrubs and Vines of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic States” was published out of New Jersey’s Forest Resource Education Center (FREC) in 2022. When the second edition ran out, Martine was asked to update the guide for a third edition.

He spent a few months updating nomenclature, fielding suggestions from other field botanists, and rewriting text. After several rounds of review by staff at the Forest Service, the new edition was printed in December. It’s a tribute to the couple’s partnership — and to the individuals who not only inspired the project when it began more than two decades ago, but first taught Chris some of the natural history that appears in the guide.

She earned a Ph.D. in Plant Biology with a focus on plant systematics at Rutgers. Throughout this journey, her focus has been learning as much as possible about the use of native plants in the landscape. Currently Kate is the horticulturist at Deep Cut Gardens, Monmouth County Parks. In April 2025 she joined the board of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey as the State Botanist.

Description

Somes will present an overview of bee, butterfly and pollinator biodiversity in New Jersey and will share some of the ongoing NJDEP conservation work related to these species. Many times the term pollinator conservation is used to lump together a wide variety of different species with very different life histories and habitat requirements. This creates challenges for conservation practitioners and land managers which he will discuss. Additionally, Somes will share information about pollinator kits the state prepares for NJ gardeners.

Bio

Robert Somes is a Senior Zoologist with New Jersey Fish and Wildlife – Endangered and Nongame Species Program. He is the Insect Conservation Project Leader as well as the Pinelands Regional Biologist.

Since 2010, New Jersey has experienced its wettest and warmest years in over a century of observations. Extreme weather/climate events, including Ida, Sandy, and Irene, along with a number of hot summers, suggest that something is happening to NJ’s climate regime. Natural variations alone cannot account for these NJ (and global) anomalies. Human influences on climate are significant, prompting discussion as to how society might mitigate or develop greater resiliency to increasing climate change. This presentation will explore the physical dimensions of the issue, both short and long term.

Dr. Dave Robinson is a Distinguished Professor of Geography at Rutgers University and New Jersey’s State Climatologist. As state climatologist, he works with a wide array of stakeholders who require climatological information and expertise to solve problems. He also directs the Rutgers NJ Weather Network, a constellation of 69 automated weather stations and co-leads the NJ chapter of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network. Globally, Dave conducts research on the role of snow cover in the climate system and as an indicator of climate change. Dave is past president of the American Association of State Climatologists and is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

The pollinator garden in Mickleton Park (Gloucester County), conceived through grants, was planted in spring of 2022 and has now been through 4 growing seasons. You will be taken on a tour through the years and seasons while introducing you to the ~60 native species which make up the garden and some of the wildlife that visits it.

What is the difference between algae and aquatic plants? The evolutionary path taken by algae never strayed from an aqueous environment. That of aquatic plants is analogous to marine mammals in the sense that their ancestors were truly terrestrial, and their path led them back into the water. There is an ecological gradient that exists for plants that make their home in the marshes and swamps of NJ. Some species live in standing water for part of the year, others part of the month, while true aquatic plants require standing water continuously. Let’s explore some of the species that exist within the interface of land and open water. A focus will be put on the adaptations and ecology that make aquatic plants unique (aka weird).

Jason Hafstad is the Preserve Manager and Ecologist for the New Jersey Natural Lands Trust. He is responsible for overseeing more than 100 nature preserves across the state totaling over 30,000 acres. Before this, he was the botanist for the Endangered & Threatened Species Unit of the NJDEP, where he reviewed wetland permit applications for impacts to rare plant species. Outside of work, he enjoys documenting underappreciated elements of New Jersey’s natural heritage like vascular plants, lichens, mushrooms, mosses, and liverworts, and is an active member and Trustee of the New Jersey Mycological Association.

New Jersey is home to more than 2,100 native plant species, yet many plant lists and gardens highlight only a small group of familiar species such as Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia spp.), and Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis). This year, the Native Plant Society of New Jersey is focusing on the less familiar species—the unusual, rare, and unique plants that make our state’s ecosystems so distinctive.

From parasitic plants that lack chlorophyll to carnivorous species that trap insects, from ancient plant lineages that predate the dinosaurs to aquatic plants that evolved on land before returning to water, New Jersey’s flora includes species that challenge our assumptions about how plants work. These “weird” plants aren’t just curiosities—they’re indicators of specialized habitats, key players in complex ecological relationships, and windows into evolutionary history. Understanding them helps us appreciate the full complexity of our native ecosystems and the importance of protecting diverse habitats.

With the kind permission of Weird NJ, our 2025 Fall Conference explores these botanical oddities. Join us as we highlight the “weird” side of New Jersey’s flora—and beyond.

The Native Plants that Grow Under Trees
This is a revised talk that adds a full 20 minutes of content to the previous talk.

In Understory: An Introduction to Native Plants and Landscaping Techniques, Ian Caton, owner of Wood Thrush Native Plant Nursery, will explore the essential role of native understory plants in cultivating resilient and biodiverse woodland ecosystems. This session will guide attendees through the diverse and beautiful native plants that grow under trees. Ian will share strategies for selecting and arranging native plants specifically adapted to thrive under tree canopies, highlighting low-maintenance methods that foster self-sustaining, ecologically balanced landscapes. Ian will discuss how integrating these native species can address common challenges in woodland areas—such as erosion control and invasive species management—while enhancing ecological stability and conserving resources. By incorporating native understory plants, participants will learn how to create landscapes that are not only functional and low-impact but also deeply beneficial to local habitats and the broader community.

Plant invasions represent one of the most pressing global change drivers, yet their belowground impacts remain poorly understood. Soil communities regulate nutrient cycling, plant diversity, and ecosystem functioning. Here, I show how invasive plants alter these processes by disrupting fungal resources, reshaping soil food webs, and homogenizing microbial communities through their root traits. Using field experiments and continental-scale trait datasets, I demonstrate how these changes cascade to reduce biodiversity and ecosystem function. By uncovering these belowground dynamics, this work highlights the importance of soil communities in predicting and mitigating the long-term impacts of invasive plants.

Dr. Matthew McCary, an Assistant Professor at Rice University, researches how environmental disturbances (biological invasions, urbanization, and climate change) alter the relationship between soil biodiversity and ecosystem health. His research is interdisciplinary, which includes field and lab experiments, mathematical and statistical modeling, and molecular tools. His research has been supported by prestigious institutions, such as the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). McCary completed his Ph.D. in ecology and evolution at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His postdoctoral training consisted of an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University’s School of the Environment.

Members of the Aster family bloom from early spring throughout the growing season, but late summer through the end of fall is the time they dominate the landscape. The ‘Asters’ or ‘composites’ are the second largest family of flowering plants. What makes this successful plant family different from all others? We’ll survey many of the colorful members of the Aster family, including asters, goldenrods, bonesets, coneflowers, tickseeds, and many others. Learn about the relationships these plants have with the insects, birds, and other animals that depend on them.

Mary Anne Borge is the editor of Butterfly Gardener magazine, an instructor at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, and a Rutgers Green Infrastructure Champion, and Chair of Lambertville’s Parks & Recreation Commission. She is the Team Leader for Lambertville Goes Wild, a volunteer organization that successfully led the City of Lambertville to certification in 2019 by the National Wildlife Federation as a community wildlife habitat. On her blog, the-natural-web.org, Mary Anne writes about and illustrates with her photography the importance of native plants to all life.

Sam Droege, a wildlife biologist at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, discusses the relationships between New Jersey’s 450 native bee species and regional plants. He explains how plant diversity—including size, shape, color, odor, and bloom timing—relates directly to bee behavior and conservation.

Becky Laboy, NPSNJ Jersey Shore chapter co-leader, educator with the Ocean County Soil Conservation District, and adjunct professor, Kean Universit,y speaks about the importance of soils. Terrestrial life depends largely on soil. This talk examines soil properties and processes that support diverse plants, animals, and other organisms on Earth and in our gardens.

Kristi MacDonald, Ph.D. in ecology and evolution, and Director of Science at Raritan Headwaters (www.raritanheadwaters.org) discusses the recent book she co-wrote with Erik Kiviat on two decades of data and assessment of the habitats and biota of the New Jersey Meadowlands. She discusses the natural and human history of the area.

Carlos Martinez Rivera, Ph.D. in biology and Curator of Living Collections at the Da Vinci Science Center, discusses how fire shapes habitats and biodiversity in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens. He explains the critical role fire plays in sustaining the unique plants, wildlife, and ecological diversity of the region.**

Some common horticultural plants such as barberry, burning bush, silvergrass, and butterfly bush are considered invasive in our forests and native habitats. By understanding plant growth form and integrated vegetation management you can effectively control these species. Michele will provide practical advice about how to manage invasive plants and reduce their spread in the state.

Nearly every day I get emails from people who have read my books and heard my talks and yet still have questions about ecological landscaping. These are good, thoughtful questions about ecology and evolution, biodiversity, invasive species, insect declines, native and non-native plants, conservation and restoration, residential and city landscapes, urban issues, oak biology, keystone plants, Homegrown National Park, monarchs, supporting wildlife at home, and more. In this talk I address as many of these queries as I can with hope that my answers will further motivate people to help restore ecosystem function where they live, work, play, worship, and farm.

Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities.

His book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 silver medal by the Garden Writer’s Association. Tallamy was awarded the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence in 2013. His next book, The Nature of Oaks: The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees, published in 2021 has received widespread praise. How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard comes out on April 8, 2025.

The understory is a crucial component of forest ecology. Volunteers with the Wild Woods Restoration Project are growing native plants for restoration efforts in local parks across the Hudson Valley. By using local ecotype seeds, they are helping to preserve the region’s genetic diversity and restore habitats in these parks. Dr. Rohleder will explain how the project organizes volunteers to grow plants at home and will discuss the concepts and challenges they face with local ecotype seeds and sustainable growing practices. Since 2022, the project has engaged over 300 volunteers and cultivated tens of thousands of plants. This initiative highlights the powerful impact volunteers can make through collective action.

Dr. Linda Rohleder founded Wild Woods Restoration Project in early 2022 to mobilize volunteers to grow local ecotype native seeds for restoration projects in local parks. The organization is now a 501c3 nonprofit and has involved over 300 volunteers. For nearly 10 years, she served as Director of Land Stewardship at the New York – New Jersey Trail Conference where she built the Trail Conference’s Stewardship department and created programs such as the Invasives Strike Force which trained over 400 invasives-mapping volunteers who collectively surveyed more than 1,500 miles of hiking trails for invasive plants, conducted over 100 invasives-removal workdays and managed a seasonal conservation corps crew. Dr. Rohleder was also the founding coordinator of the Lower Hudson Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) in New York leading it for almost ten years. She grew the partnership to over 50 organizations and agencies, and led the development and implementation of regional strategy for invasive species management in the Lower Hudson. In addition, Dr. Rohleder led a volunteer group to create and maintain the Trail Conference’s native plant gardens.

In 2013, Dr. Rohleder received her PhD in Ecology from Rutgers University, where she studied the effects of deer on forest understories. While attending graduate school she worked as a seasonal park resource assistant in Monmouth County, NJ, and taught beginning Biology labs at Rutgers and Wetland Plant ID for Rutgers’ Wetland Delineation certification series. Prior to returning to graduate school she worked at AT&T as a software developer and project manager for 14 years. Dr. Rohleder has also spent more than 30 years creating native plant wildlife habitat on her own properties both in New Jersey and New York. She is a member of the Garden Club of Orange and Dutchess Counties and a Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Forest Owner.

What is your connection footprint? Every living thing relies on connections to other species – and our connections to those species, both great and small, are critical to their survival and the survival of entire ecosystems, starting in our own backyards. Oaks and mosses, aphids and butterflies, hummingbirds and hawks – they all have a role to play in the great web of life. What do hummingbirds feed their babies? What species rely on our vanishing ash and beech trees? Randi will discuss the overlooked, the understudied, and the importance of even the finest threads in the food chain. She will cover lessons learned from species lost in the past, current challenges, and hopeful paths to the future that rely upon us and the actions that we can take, together, in our gardens, fields, and forests, to protect ecosystems for generations to come.

Most people think of cities as the absence of nature, especially New York. The Big Apple is famous for its bustling sidewalks, skyscrapers, and pigeons, and yet, it is also home to a surprising diversity of wildflowers, including the globally rare Nantucket Juneberry (Amelanchier nantucketensis). Despite its urban facade, the city supports an impressive wild flora: 1,194 taxa with 64% being native species. Join Marielle Anzelone as she shares insights and lessons for home gardeners drawn from over two decades of fieldwork across the forests, marshes, and meadows of the five boroughs. She will also discuss how she cultivated community through public gardens in schools and parks and communicated her passion for urban wildflowers through politics, publications, and radio broadcasts.

The value of native plants is clear to so many of us who garden and manage land, but there’s a lingering stereotype about native landscapes—that they’re messy, unkempt, disorganized spaces that look more derelict than desirable. While the wild native garden aesthetic may take time to catch on, in the meantime there are simple things native gardeners can do to make natives appealing to their friends, neighbors, and communities. Drawing from his experience as an estate gardener and public horticulture leader, Toshi Yano will share the practices that helped him create exuberant plantings and “legible” spaces while still maintaining the kind of tidy presentation that homeowner associations expect when they use terms like “curb appeal.”

Individually, as we fill our balconies, yards, and fields with native plants, we are creating small parks rich in local biodiversity. Together, we are building an interconnected park that extends across our continent. Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope, envisions this community effort as the Homegrown National Park, a conservation initiative that aims to restore 20 million acres of native plantings in North America. Our individual Homegrown National Park, the place we call home, is our shelter—our sanctuary. Like oaks and goldenrods, native plant enthusiasts are keystone members of the movement to restore biodiversity. How can we maximize our beneficial impact in this role? The native plants we cultivate attract insects, birds, and other animals. Our sanctuary becomes their sanctuary—their place of refuge and safety. How can we ensure that we truly are providing sanctuary for the wildlife our native plants attract? How do we increase our landscape’s ability to provide ecological services that wildlife (and people!) need for survival? How do we welcome others beyond our community to join us in this critical movement toward restoring biodiversity? Let’s explore solutions to these pressing issues together, as park rangers for Homegrown National Park!

Now more than ever our yards and community spaces need to support biodiversity. How can we ensure that our spaces are both ecologically rich and beautiful? In this fast-paced, practical workshop, we’ll look at which plants matter most when it comes to your local biodiversity; how to procure them for generous plantings; and how to place and care for them to increase their visual appeal. We’ll consider strategies to ensure that our landscapes gain community acceptance such that they become invitations for others to transform their landscapes. A cost-conscious, DIY approach makes taking action doable. Along with a detailed handout, you’ll come away inspired and empowered to invite more biodiversity into your spaces.

Sarah F. Jayne has worked intensively with plants and wildlife for over four decades from California to the East Coast. She earned a degree in agriculture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and later owned and operated an organic market farm and nursery.

Inspired by Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, Sarah transformed her approach to landscaping. Recognizing the pivotal role that each person can play in addressing the biodiversity crisis, she trials methods to manage ecological landscapes that enable people who may have limited resources and little or no gardening skills to encourage biodiverse ecosystems that support wildlife where they live.

Her book Nature’s Action Guide: How to Support Biodiversity and Your Local Ecosystem, a companion to Doug Tallamy’s Nature’s Best Hope, features 15 actions we urgently need to take to support biodiversity. Sarah lives in Oxford, Pennsylvania surrounded by wildlife habitat. Find out more about Sarah at www.naturesactionguide.org. Free and opened to the public.

Our human brains follow our eyes, and, like insect pollinators, we invariably focus our attention on bright showy floral displays. But our lively, colorful pollinator gardens will only be as successful as the food, primarily leaf matter, we provide for the pollinating insects’ early life stages. This presentation will highlight keystone plants, those trees, shrubs, and flowers that support the greatest diversity of insect life.

About the speaker: Carolyn Summers is the author of Designing Gardens with Flora of the American East (2010)and co-author of the revised edition published in 2024. Her photographs grace the pages of The Pollinator Victory Garden by friend and colleague Kim Eierman. After completing her BSLA in Landscape Architecture at CCNY, she began her career with the Trust for Public Land, producing an open space report for the Harbor Herons Project that has guided preservation efforts to create an urban wildlife refuge on Staten Island in New York City. Carolyn later moved to the city’s Department of Environmental Protection as the agency’s first Director of Natural Resources, where she implemented a native plants policy for all agency construction/restoration projects that continues today. Following this, she went to the Natural Resources Defense Council, where she led a regional project to preserve and restore wildlife habitat and public access in the New York-New Jersey Bight.

Ms. Summers is currently an adjunct professor at Westchester Community College with The Native Plant Center’s Go Native U certificate program. She and her husband have recently opened their country home, Flying Trillium Gardens and Preserve for public tours so that designers, gardeners, and homeowners can be inspired by the beauty of native plants in both garden and natural settings.

Program:
As we incorporate more native plants into our landscapes, there are so many good reasons to use plants propagated from seeds. But wild plants have evolved a dizzying array of mechanisms, including chemical-induced dormancy and mandatory cold stratification, to ensure that their seeds disperse, persevere, and germinate at just the right time under natural conditions. These mechanisms are not in place to frustrate would-be plant propagators but must be understood to successfully grow native plants from seed. A far-reaching discussion of the issues surrounding seed collection, procurement, and propagation, with information that will encourage the novice and challenge the professional alike.

You don’t need a large property to grow a beautiful native plant garden. This talk explains how to grow native plants in very small spaces: in pots, in just 3 square feet of ground, and in typical small suburban spaces, such as tree islands, front borders, or around a lamppost. We’ll cover horticultural techniques such as the special requirements of plants grown in pots as well as design practices such as massing your plants and using nature as a design template.

About the speaker: Elaine Silverstein is certified in Sustainable Landscape Management by the New York Botanical Garden; she has also earned the Urban Naturalist certificate and continues to study botany, ecology, and landscape design. She maintains a horticulture practice in Bergen County where she advises clients on sustainability, garden design, and installing and caring for native plantings. She is a vice president of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey and co-leader of the Bergen-Passaic chapter. She lives in Glen Rock, where she is a member of the Environmental Commission.

In this talk, Kazys Varnelis—artist, historian, and President of NPSNJ—explores naturalistic design, focusing on the complex and evolving dynamics of the forest edge. By incorporating native plants, designers can create spaces that both enhance biodiversity and establish visual harmony with their surroundings. Varnelis will examine how plant communities at the forest edge present opportunities to reimagine suburban landscapes in an era of climate change, fostering resilience and sustainability. This talk highlights strategies for selecting and arranging native species to encourage natural plant succession and adapt to the shifting nature of the landscape. Drawing inspiration from the spontaneous interactions found in nature, Varnelis shows how we can redefine the relationship between design, nature, and ecological stewardship.

Growing Native Trees

Presented by Basil Camu, Arborist, Leaf & Limb
Author of From Wasteland to Wonder, Easy Ways we Can Help Heal Earth in the Sub/urban Landscape (available free at https://www.leaflimb.com/wonder/ free)

The way we currently manage the suburban and urban landscape is creating a wasteland and harming the well-being of Earth. We pave over forests, use giant machines to scrape away healthy soil, and turn thriving grasslands into dead lawns. Rain is unable to soak into the ground and instead rushes downhill, causing erosion and flooding. We repeatedly soak the land in toxic chemicals that kill life. There is little food for the birds, butterflies, and bees that need it. These efforts are costly, time-intensive, and increase CO2 in the atmosphere.

Fortunately, we have an alternative path: we can work with natural systems instead of working against them. By doing so, we can help heal Earth. We also save time and money because we perform fewer tasks and use fewer products. Best of all, these are simple things that anyone can do regardless of their knowledge or experience.

During the presentation we will begin by examining how the systems of photosynthesis and soil formation work and how they affect water, carbon, and all other life on land. We will also discuss how we are damaging these systems and practices we can implement that help heal Earth based on first-hand expertise developed at Leaf & Limb. We’ll begin with the easiest concepts, like planting saplings and saving mature trees. Then we’ll move to some more challenging, more impactful approaches, like planting pocket forests and replacing our lawns with Piedmont Prairies. Finally, for those who want to help shift paradigms even more, we discuss the Project Pando model to work with our community to gather native seeds, raise them into trees, and give them away for free.

Micro Forests for Macro Solutions: An Introduction to Miyawaki Forest

John Evangelista of Groundwork Elizabeth will introduce the Miyawaki Method, a way to reforest our environment by creating dense, fast-growing micro forests. Developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, this method creates dense, self-sustaining forests using native plant species, which thrive with little maintenance once established. Unlike traditional landscaping, Miyawaki Forests are planted with high density and carefully planned plant diversity, enabling them to grow up to ten times faster than typical tree-planting methods. Within a few years, these micro forests can achieve self-sufficiency, needing minimal maintenance while continuing to expand and strengthen ecosystems over time. Miyawaki Forests have become a recognized way to combat climate change, support biodiversity, improve air quality, and strengthen resilience within communities.

Miyawaki Forests are ideal for urban areas with limited space, as they can be planted on small plots such as vacant lots, park edges, school grounds, and community centers. The dense planting design makes them especially effective for noise reduction and pollution control near highways and industrial areas. Beyond cities, the Miyawaki Method can be applied in suburban areas, degraded lands, deforested zones, and rural landscapes, where it can quickly restore soil health, prevent erosion, and bring back native flora and fauna.

Evangelista’s work at Groundwork Elizabeth focuses on community-driven projects that combine ecosystem restoration with local engagement. In “Micro Forests for Macro Solutions,” he will highlight how communities can take an active role in planting and caring for these micro forests, which has been shown to strengthen public connection to local green spaces. From schools to neighborhood associations, the Miyawaki Method offers opportunities for people to directly participate in restoring the local environment, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship across generations.

New Jersey’s trees shape our landscapes, providing essential shelter for wildlife, improving our air and water, and offering shade that cools our communities. From the towering oaks of the Pine Barrens to the flowering dogwoods brightening our woodlands, these trees are more than scenery—they are vital to the health and resilience of our ecosystems.

Join NPSNJ for Rooted in New Jersey: The Science, Challenges, and Future of Our Native Trees, an in-depth virtual conference dedicated to understanding the essential role of trees in New Jersey and the efforts needed to protect and sustain them. Trees are vital pillars of our ecosystems, supporting wildlife, enhancing biodiversity, and improving air and water quality. They stabilize soil, regulate temperatures, and create healthier environments for all. Yet, despite their immense benefits, trees are often perceived as more difficult to plant and maintain than smaller native plants, while mature trees are frequently seen as safety risks. With thoughtful planning, however, tree planting and maintenance can be straightforward, and strategic placement can mitigate potential safety concerns.

Across New Jersey, tree cover is steadily declining due to urban development, disease, and invasive species, posing serious challenges for local ecosystems. The loss of mature trees reduces critical habitat, impacts biodiversity, and destabilizes soil and water systems, leaving landscapes vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and extreme heat. This conference will bring together experts, advocates, and community leaders to discuss practical strategies for conserving trees, advancing urban forestry, and integrating native trees and plants to build resilient, sustainable landscapes across New Jersey.

This year’s event will feature an engaging lineup of talks and panel discussions, providing valuable insights into planting, protecting, and maintaining New Jersey’s trees for a healthier, greener future.

New Jersey has the most Superfund sites in the nation, despite being the fourth smallest state. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has embarked on an ambitious program to remediate these sites for public health and safety. In the last twenty years there has been an added push to restore these sites, often of large size, to open space and native wildlife habitat.

Early on, Bob Swain of the Dawson Corporation (now SumCo Eco Contracting) decided to pursue these projects. He obtained all the hazardous waste credentials and invested in equipment and workforce to comply with strict EPA and Army Corps of Engineers requirements for work of this nature.

Bill Young, working for Dawson, was project manager on no less than forty of these hazmat sites in NY/NJ/PA and DE. On this talk, Bill will provide details, insights, and results from four high profile projects. Because these sites can never be built on, it is a rare opportunity to provide critical habitat and bring wildlife back. And many of these cleaned up sites provide a measure of environmental justice to underserved communities.

Bill’s bio:

An experienced field scientist, Young has more than 39 years’ experience in wetland banking, mitigation, building wetlands, monitoring, and permitting. His project portfolio includes more than 45 coastal salt marsh and freshwater wetland projects as well as upland habitat projects, Living Shorelines, and Green Infrastructure. He has helped restore the shrunken island of Jamaica Bay, NY, including Yellow Bar Hassock.

Young’s experience ranges from the design of wastewater treatment wetlands to restoration of Superfund/Brownfield sites. Bill is just as comfortable in construction as he is in consulting. In fact, he is most at home out in the field running crews.

Young is certified as a professional wetland scientist (PWS) by the Society of Wetland Scientists, a Certified Ecological Restoration Specialist (CERP)with SER and has full Army Corps of Engineers training in Construction Quality Management and 40-hour HAZWOPER certification as well.

He is an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he has taught Ecology in the Graduate School of Design for the past 22 years. Bill has also taught at City College of New York and Temple University.

For decades, stormwater has been ditched and piped to get rainwater away from buildings and properties quickly. The downside is that all that additional rainwater ends up in nearby creeks where the increased volume and velocity erode banks and add pollutants to the natural environment. Rainscaping practices like rain gardens are designed to hold water on the property longer, to encourage water to infiltrate back into the ground, like it did before development. Permeable paving also encourages water to enter back into the ground. These and other rainscaping practices will be discussed in this homeowner-friendly webinar presented by Scott Woodbury, owner of Cacalia Design and Wilding.

Scott Woodbury is the owner of Cacalia Design and Wilding, a native landscaping design and consulting studio. He led development of the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve for 30 years and founded the St. Louis Chapter of Wild Ones, the largest chapter in the country. Scott currently teaches Native Landscape Practices, a course at St. Louis Community College and is a regular speaker, writer and consultant on native landscaping throughout the region.

He received a BS degree in horticulture at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and has worked at various public gardens including the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve, Tudor Place in Washington D.C., Old Westbury Gardens in New York, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and Castello Di Uzzano in Florence, Italy.

He currently serves as advisor to the horticulture program of St. Louis Community College, Grow Native! and Wild Ones St. Louis. Scott serves on the planning committees for the Partners for Native Landscaping conference and the small grants programs for The Deer Creek Watershed Alliance and MSD Project Clear.

Native plants are most often viewed by the public in ‘wild’ spaces such as meadows or as highly managed landscapes in large botanical gardens. There are few examples or resources on how to incorporate native plants into the landscape for residents with small yards in a way that fits the tidy yard look that many people are comfortable with and can afford. This presentation includes resources for residents developed over a five-year program that make it easier for residents to include natives in their home landscapes. Kate will present an array of simple landscape design templates as well as resources on common weeds and invasive plants that residents may encounter in the home garden.
