Webbs Mill Bog Exploration

June 25, 2023 @ 10:00 am 11:30 am

Join us on an exploration of Webbs Mill Bog on June 25 from 10am-11:30am. Orchids, Pitcher Plants, Sundews and Curly Grass Fern are a few of the unique and rare plants we will encounter here. Jason Hafstad, Preserve Manager for NJ Natural Lands Trust, will guide us on this walk and discuss the adaptations of these native wetland plants. We will utilize the boardwalk that traverses over the mucky substrate for up-close views of these special plants.

A short trail leading to the bog contains surface roots that may present a tripping hazard. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water and a pocket snack. Bring binoculars and a loop if you have them; they can be handy for viewing plants far away and close-up.

Directions to the location are tricky. Parking at this site is extremely limited. Carpooling will be necessary. Please RSVP, so we can coordinate carpooling and know to expect you: .

OUR GUIDE:

Jason Hafstad is the Preserve Manager for the NJ Natural Lands Trust, responsible for overseeing 100+ nature preserves across the state totaling close to 30,000 acres. Before this, he was the botanist for the Endangered & Threatened Species Unit of the NJDEP, where he reviewed wetland permit applications for impacts to rare plant species. He has also worked on projects related to habitat restoration, rare species habitat management, ecological community classification, ecological integrity assessments, invasive species management, and forest ecology. Outside of work, he enjoys documenting other underappreciated elements of New Jersey’s biodiversity like mosses, liverworts, lichens, mushrooms, and slime molds.
