The Dirt on Native Plants, how growing these plants can save your yard, your wallet, and our wildlife.

This four-week course will delve into ecology and highlight the abundance of native species. We’ll examine individual species to see how they can best be utilized in gardens. The course will also cover techniques for container gardening and thoughtful strategies for keeping your neighbors satisfied. You’ll walk away with a greater appreciation for the wild flora and fauna all around us.   

Instructor Bio

Jason Goldman is a Naturalist, Garden Designer, and Ecological Presenter. Growing up in New Jersey, he always has an appreciation for the natural world. With a degree in Ecology and a passion for educating others, Jason strives to empower others and help them become more environmentally conscious. Jason has presented for numerous garden clubs, public libraries, and is experienced in working with local government. 

Session 1 – Thursday, March 6th: The Ecology of Native Plants

In this deep dive of ecology, the world of native plants will be explored in-depth. Fascinating connections between plants and wildlife will be uncovered, with particular emphasis on native bees, butterflies, and birds. Everyone will walk away with a new understanding for the importance of native plants and how they support so much life around us.

Session 2 – Thursday, March 13th: Native Plant Garden Design
This presentation will discuss the plentiful benefits of choosing native plants in human landscapes. Then we’ll cover the ins and outs of garden design, connecting them to native plant gardening. Keeping your neighbors and wildlife happy is not only attainable, it’s easy!

Session 3 – Thursday, March 20th: Native Plant Spotlights
Next we will highlight an abundance of native plant species, from flowering perennials to towering trees, and everything in between. You will learn what makes each plant unique and how to utilize them in your garden.

Session 4 – Thursday, March 27th: Container Gardening with Native & Hands-On Garden Designing 

This interactive session will provide an exciting opportunity for all participants to design their very own garden. The instructor will provide resources and guidelines ahead of time. Each participant will receive helpful feedback from the presenter, including helpful tips for “Cues to care”. This session will also cover how to incorporate native plants into smaller spaces with container gardening.
