Spring is almost in peak bloom season in the eastern deciduous forest’s woodland understory. On a mid-spring walk at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, you are likely to see a mass of Virginia Bluebells, Wood Poppies, blooming Mayapple, Shooting Star, Wild Geranium, Woodlland Phlox, several trillium, lingering early spring bloomers such as Spring Beauty and Wild Ginger, and a star of early May, the Yellow Lady’s Slipper orchid. There may be early blooming Pinxter-flower Azalea, Redbud, Flowering Dogwood, Blackhaw Viburnum, many unfurling ferns, and much more!
Mary Anne Borge is a naturalist, photographer, author and educator.
