Guided Central Park Bird and Nature Walk During Spring Migration with Urban Naturalist and Birder Ken Chaya

April 25, 2025 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm

Place: We will most likely meet at the park entrance at West 72nd Street and Central Park West. This entrance is conveniently located across the street from the C and B Subway lines. Those traveling in from NJ may opt to drive or take a taxi to the park rather than the subway. The final decision on the meeting place is to be confirmed.

Explore historic Central Park—Manhattan’s wild green heart—and learn how to spot and identify its wildlife and tree species. Ken Chaya, who has been a regular “Central Park Birder” for over three decades, will show you some of the best birding areas and help you to spot, identify, and observe many of the park’s wild birds as they migrate through the park this spring. Some of the areas that we are likely to explore will be Strawberry Fields, The Ramble, and The Lake.

This tour will explore birds and trees as well as other urban wildlife and park history. It will appeal to everyone—beginners as well as experienced birders, lovers of nature, and those who simply want to get to know Central Park more intimately.

As the cartographer/designer of “Central Park Entire—The Definitive Illustrated Map” (and app for iPhones), Ken has logged over 500 miles documenting over 20,000 trees and illustrating every paved path and woodland trail in all 843 acres of the park. In The New Yorker magazine, Nick Paumgarten wrote of the map: “It is a beautiful and meticulous artifact, as full of captivating detail as the M.T.A.’s new subway map is devoid of it.” The New York Times called the map, “A Labor of Wonder.”

Note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. There will be opportunities for restroom stops along the route. The best months for spring migration in NYC are April and May.
