Lianne Pflug is a New Jersey-based botanical illustrator passionate about spreading knowledge and appreciation of the natural world. North America’s native ecosystems deeply inspire her, and her work aims to highlight the importance and unique beauty of these plant and animal species. Lianne has created artwork in the fields of surface design, publishing, and science communication. In this beginner class to botanical watercolor painting, artists, gardeners, and naturalists alike are welcome to explore capturing the beauty of plants through art. This class will focus on basic drawing and painting techniques that illustrator Lianne Pflug uses to create her botanical pieces. Lianne will guide students through drawing exercises using references, watercolor painting practice sessions, and finally, combining the two techniques into a finished piece of botanical artwork over the course of 4 classes. In addition to practicing the technical aspects of art, students will also experiment with composition and their own personal style. Throughout the course, an emphasis will be placed on slowing down to find inspiration in the natural world around you, and learning to enrich your art practice with your observations. Whether you’re an experienced artist or completely new to drawing, you will learn to more deeply appreciate the natural world through art, and gain the confidence to nurture your creativity beyond this course.
