Course Description
Facility with botanical nomenclature may be imperative for landscapers, horticulturalists, botanists and designers, but it is useful for home gardeners too. Contrary to the opinion of many, Latin plant names need not be intimidating to pronounce or memorize.
In this class, we will review the rules of taxonomy, Latin grammar and pronunciation, and learn about the history of the binomial system in use today. We will also become familiar with the meanings of the most common Botanical Latin words while learning to pronounce Latin plant names correctly and with confidence. The emphasis will be on names of plants that are native to North America.
Required Text: Stearn’s Dictionary of Plant Names for Gardeners
Weekly homework will be assigned and weekly quizzes will be based on the homework. There will be a final exam during the last class.
