Description
Join botanist Jared Rosenbaum of Wild Ridge Plants for an autumn hike exploring the abundant native plants at Musconetcong Gorge Reservation. Musconetcong Gorge features one of the most diverse forest understories in central New Jersey, with a plethora of forest herbs such as black cohosh, wild ginger, bloodroot, hepatica, rue anemone, and Solomon’s plume, as well as several state rarities. Its varied shrub understory is dominated by spicebush and mapleleaf viburnum and also includes less common species such as red elderberry, wild hydrangea, and purple-flowering raspberry. It’s a great place to get to know shade-tolerant native plants in their natural habitat, with less deer browse pressure than is the norm.
The trail is a very rocky moderate hike and features some elevation gain. Hikers should be comfortable with moderately difficult trail conditions. Wear proper shoes and clothing.
Participants are welcome to stop at Wild Ridge Plants after for refreshments and to browse the plants. It is about five minutes away from the hike location.
