FALL 2017 MEETINGS: Second Wednesday of each month, 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, December 13, 7:30 p.m.: Holiday party and seed swap: bring your seeds (native plants only). We will have envelopes and labels. If you would like to bring refreshments, please email us at bergenpassaic@npsnj.org. This is also a great time to review and evaluate your gardening year, so let us know if you would like to share your experiences with the group or you have pictures to share.

JANUARY MEETING: Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 7:30 p.m.: "Pruning Principles and Practice," presented by chapter Co-leader Tom Bender. Winter is the best time to prune most woody plants. Come and have all your questions answered!

All chapter meetings will take place on the second Wednesday of the month from September to June at the Headquarters of the NY-NJ Trail Conference

The Headquarters of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is located at 600 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah (not Oakland, there's a similar address there). The building is located between Ramapo College and Ramapo County Reservation park.

Trail Conference headquarters is located on Route 202, Ramapo Valley Road, in Mahwah, just north of Ramapo Valley County Reservation and opposite the turnoff for Darlington Road. The parking lot is small, but overflow parking is available next door at the Ramapo County Reservation with a short walk through the woods. This parking and trail are NOT lighted, so attendees should bring a flashlight, carpool, or arrive early to park near the building. The path from the Reservation parking lot to the trail center begins just to the left of the "do not enter" sign.

Rt. 202 is closed north of the Schoolhouse. Traffic detour signs will be posted by the Department of Transportation. Cars coming from the north (Route 17) should follow exit signs for MacArthur Avenue to Darlington Avenue. Cars coming from the south (Rt. 202) will not be affected.

Hunterdon Chapter

NEW PERMANENT LOCATION: Hunterdon North County Branch Library 65 Halstead Street, Clinton

December Meeting:Tuesday, January 16, 2017, 7:00 pm

Topic: Arrachnids!!! by John Black President, Native Plant Society, NJ

John is back by popular demand! After his wonderful talk on dragonflies, he's back with another favorite topic--Spiders. While spiders are not the most cuddly creatures around our gardens, they are truly amazing and vitally important. John's program looks at spiders from the lighter side; forget about the humdrum identification, he will discuss some of the fascinating and unique things that spiders can do and make the connection of why that matters to us two legged monsters. There are many unusual spiders that catch prey in most unusual ways. Did you know that spiders dance? Did you know that there is a type of music that came about because of spiders?

Everyone is invited - you do not have to be a Hunterdon resident. The program is free and light refreshments will be provided. If you plan to attend, RSVP at hunterdon@npsnj.org

Chapter contact is Cinny MacGonagle cmacgonagle@yahoo.com

Jersey Shore Chapter

Please join the Jersey Shore Chapter of the Native Plant Society at our Tuesday, December 5, 2017, 5:00 PM Holiday Party at Jake's Branch County Park  (same location as last year)!

We're going to start a little early for those of you who want to get back home at a reasonable time, but for those who can't get there until later - we can stay as late as 8:00 PM.

We're mixing things up a bit this year by inviting Kelly Austin of "the little plant company" to come give us some professional pointers in how to create a gorgeous floral (greens) arrangement. She and her husband Jason were mentioned in last Sunday's New York Times in an article entitled " Time to Put the Garden to Bed."

We had WAY too much food last year, so in addition to delicious sandwiches and something hot in the crock pot, if any one or two or three of you have a specialty (sweet or savory) that you would like to contribute, please let me know.

FINALLY, we're incorporating a garden-themed White Elephant gift exchange White Elephant gift exchange (we'll be modifying the official rules for simplicity's sake). Basically, we would like you to bring SOMETHING YOU ALREADY HAVE (no fair buying anything) that has a garden theme, wrapping it up, and bringing it to the meeting. Don't put your name on it - everything's anonymous so feel free to get "creative." This can range from a bag of your home-made compost to a coffee table book that's too big for your coffee table and everything in between (envelope of seeds, creative plant markers made from household "stuff," a cutting from your favorite houseplant, that hideous garden ornament your Aunt Joan gave you last year, etc., etc.).

Please RSVP to Mary Judge (732-255-0472, or  mjudge@ocean.edu).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mary, Karen, Becky, and Pam

Dear Jersey Shore Chapter members and native plant enthusiasts, as a reminder, the Jersey Shore Chapter meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:00pm.

Jersey Shore Chapter Co-leaders,
Mary Judge, Karen Walzer, Pam Almeida and Becky Laboy

Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts 22 N. High Street, Millville, NJ 08332

Joe Alvarez NPSNJ Member :

Our program will include a presentation and demonstration by Del-Bay Chapter member Joe Alvarez. With over 30 plus years experience in the landscape and nursery trade, Joe is a native gardener, local horticulture lecturer and currently an agriculture educator at Cumberland College. As a former Master Gardener Instructor he has a unique perspective on plants that do well dried and/or preserved, including natives.

Native gardening has enjoyed an increase in popularity recently and natural decorations have been a tradition for many years. With the holiday season upon us soon it is a time for families to come together for many special traditions. So start a new tradition and learn how to make your own decorations with nature

Southeast Chapter

We are excited about our local NPSNJ chapter that serves native plant enthusiasts in Atlantic County and Cape May County as well as anyone from areas west or north who would like to join us. We hold eight evening meetings a year on the 3rd Monday of the month (September, October, November, February, March, April, May, and June). We are delighted that Stockton University's Sustainability Program – specifically the Campus Farm Native Plant Project – is sponsoring us and making it possible for us to have meetings in an easily-accessible location and a comfortable setting with the necessary "smart room" equipment.

Our chapter does not meeting December or January, so this is our last meeting until Monday, February 19.

If you would like to be updated with details about our future meetings, please contact Jesse Connor at:  southeast@npsnj.org.  (Contacting this site will put you on the list for monthly meeting information, field trip info, and timely updates.)

Jesse Connor, Jack Connor, Barbara Fiedler, and Steve Fiedler
